Canada withdraws from Kyoto protocol
Canada will formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, a government official announced on Monday. Environment Minister Peter Kent said at a press conference that “Kyoto, for Canada, is in the past.” “We are invoking Canada’s legal right to formally withdraw,” he said. Kent stated that his country had no choice given its current economic situation.
“While our government has taken action since 2006 to make real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions under Kyoto, Canada is facing radical and irresponsible choices if we are to avoid punishing multi-billion-dollar payments.” Canada says it would back a new global deal to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, but insists it must cover all major industrialized nations. These would have to include China, and countries not party to Kyoto – such as the United States. The agreement, signed in 1997, requires industrialized countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
