2000-12-06, Dron: http://www.wargamer.com/sp/milit ary/aircraft/mig-21/mig-21-101.j pg [not image] Russia and Croatia are planning to increase their military co-operation. Among high-priority points here may be modernization of MiG-21 fighter jets in service with Croation Air Force. Payment for the service could be both financial and material. There is a possibility that a part of modernization bill will be used to settle 1 billion 600 million Soviet debt to Yugoslavia. According to UN resolution, Croatia is eligible for about 28% of this sum therefore Russia will have a chance to earn cash and pay off debts while Croatia will get its air force fixed and tighten relations with an old friend. Under the new contract, the additional trainers will replace four "single seater" MiG-21 aircraft and an additional full mission simulator for the upgraded MiG-21 Lancer aircraft will be supplied by Elbit Systems, thus expanding the training capability of the Romanian Air Force. 2000-11-24, Serge Pod: Indian order for Hawk trainer edges closer 24 November 2000 The Indian Defence Minister, George Fernandes, has told the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament that India is close to ordering 66 Hawk advanced jet trainers. According to Fernades, negotiations with BAE SYSTEMS, the manufacturer of the aircraft, are close to success. At present India has no intermediate training aircraft in which pilots can transition from basic training to fast jets in the Indian Air Force. As a consequence the IAF has a very high fatal accident record as inexperienced pilots learn 'on the job'. http://defence-data.com/storypic /hawksnow.jpg [not image] Hawk fighters The Indian Hawk purchase saga has been going on for sixteen years, but has been hampered by on/off diplomatic relations, recessions in the Indian economy and, more recently a concern that if bought, the aircraft would not be subject to sanctions imposed by third parties. Some Hawk technology is US in origin and therefore subject to sanctions imposed in the…

2000-09-30, Dron: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy jetfighter was missing in the Gulf on Friday and presumed to have crashed in an accident shortly after taking off on a training flight from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the Navy said. The ship, on patrol in waters off Iraq, lost radio contact with the pilot of the single-seat F/A-18C after it took off to conduct a carrier-landing proficiency flight, according to a Navy spokeswoman at the Pentagon (news - web sites). Lt. Cmdr. Dawn Cutler told Reuters the plane apparently went down at about 9:30 a.m. Gulf time and that a search and rescue mission was under way from the carrier and other U.S. naval units in the area. Iraq said its air defense forces had shot down the plane. ``It is worth noting that every time the US military command is forced to admit that a jet has crashed, it says the reason for the crash was a technical malfunction, while the real reason for the crash is because the planes were hit by the heroic Iraqi defenses' fire,'' Iraqi radio said. Iraqi…

2000-07-12, Serge Pod: Boost For Russia`s Space Programme Russian rocket engineers said on Tuesday they were confident the mysterious fuel pressure loss during last week’s test launch of a Proton rocket was a one-off event and were confident that there was nothing to worry about prior to the crucial launch of the ISS’ cornerstone – Zvezda Module. The only thing the Russian space engineers were worried about before the launch was Wednesday morning’s weather forecast. “It was not really good, there is a chance of thunderstorms,” they told reporters. However, the sun was shining and the sky was clear blue when the Proton rocket carrying the Zvesda ISS module bound for the International space station was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Chief of the U.S. space agency NASA Dan Goldin attended the launch together with Yury Koptev of Russia's Space Agency. Later Goldin said the event was a triumph of Russia's will and commitment to ISS project. “The Russians have gone through all sorts of difficulty with their…

2000-05-27, Jag_22: PROGRAM MONITOR HARM Upgrade Tackles GPS Jammers, Dual Seeker Design Moves Forward The Navy’s HARM program is in the process of developing three upgrades to the weapon. (US Navy photo) The US Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, CA, completed the second test firing of its AGM-88C High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) Block V last month. Fielded as a software upgrade, the “home on jam” Block V improvement was developed by HARM manufacturer Raytheon Systems Company (Lewisville, TX) in conjunction with the Navy HARM Program Management Office, PMA-242. Block V enables the anti-radar missile to attack jammers that interfere with Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation signals. The Navy will use Block V HARMs to ensure that next-generation GPS-guided munitions such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition and Joint Stand-Off Weapon will not lose their precision guidance capabilities in the face of low-cost, low-power GPS jammers. During the tests, a Navy F-18 launched a HARM against a simulated jammer. Although no…

2000-04-09, Serge Pod: Sunday, 9 April, 2000, 07:51 GMT 08:51 UK US military trial plane crashes The Osprey MV-22 has only just come into service (courtesy US Navy) A plane under development with the United States Marine Corps has crashed in a fireball while landing at an Arizona airport, killing all 19 people on board. Analysts described the accident as a serious setback for a key Pentagon development programme. Police said the MV-22 Osprey came down at about 2000 (0300 GMT) at Avra Valley Airport in Marana, west of Tucson, in fair weather. Firefighters at the crash scene Witnesses reported seeing the revolutionary plane plunge after an explosion in the sky. "It was fully engulfed and there were small explosions," said Katy Heiden, a fire service spokeswoman. Television pictures showed smoke rising from a smouldering wreckage that was lit up by lights from emergency vehicles. 2000-04-05, Serge Pod: USAF tests Swiss developed liquid-filled anti-G suit 5 April 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /gsuit.jpg [not image] The US Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California is testing a new concept in aircrew protection, a liquid-filled, full-body anti-gravity suit being developed by a Swiss company, Life Support Systems AG. Testing of the "Libelle" anti-G suit is a collaborative effort by TPS, Air Combat Command's Humans Systems Integration Division and the Air Expeditionary Force Battlelab at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. During high-G acceleration forces, much of a pilot's blood is pushed towards the body's lower half. In just seconds, a shift in blood volume away from the brain can cause a blackout. To counter the phenomenon, fighter aircrew use pneumatic (compressed air) anti-G suits. Using hydrostatic (liquid) force to regulate suit pressure, the Swiss anti-G suit could prove better than current pneumatic anti-G suits. Life Support Systems has been developing the Libelle concept for…
