2003-10-23, Serge Pod: Aeronautics UAV sign cooperation agreement with EADS   The agreement comes after the failure of a similar agreement with Israel Aircraft Industries.   Dror Marom 21 Oct 03 18:00   Yavne-based Aeronautics UAV Systems has signed a cooperation agreement with European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), Aeronautics UAV CEO Avi Leumi told "Globes". EADS is the world's second-largest aerospace company. The agreement with EADS comes after the failure of a similar agreement with Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) over mutual recriminations and allegations of dishonesty. The seven-year IAI-Aeronautics UAV Systems agreement was supposed to lead to joint marketing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). IAI also hoped to add Aeronautics UAV's AeroStar UAV to its basket of products. AeroStar is smaller and cheaper than IAI's UAVs, which cost $2-3 million each. IAI also had an option to acquire 26% of Aeronautics UAV from its co-owners Leumi and Moshe Caspi. Published by Globes [online] - גלובס זירת העסקים של ישראל -…

2003-09-06, TbMA: September 2003 War Experience Shapes Future Vehicle Design  by Sandra I. Erwin   The Marine Corps’ combat experience in Iraq could prompt significant changes to the design and performance requirements of its future combat vehicles. Current plans for next-generation Marine expeditionary fighting vehicles may be revisited, in light of growing concerns that they may be too vulnerable and not lethal enough. Under a program called the Marine Expeditionary Family of Fighting Vehicles, or MEFFV, the Corps intends to replace the M1 Abrams tank and the Light Armored Vehicle with much nimbler and technologically advanced platforms . According to preliminary concepts, the new family of vehicles would include a 10-ton wheeled variant (the LAV replacement) and a 30-ton tracked version that would replace the tank. Like the Army’s Future Combat Systems, the MEFFV would rely on stealth, speed and digital communications links to overcome the smaller size and lack of protective armor. The Defense Department’s Joint…

2003-09-04, TbMA: Issue Date: September 01, 2003 Slow and dumpy vs. fast and sleek The A-10 has survived just about everything, but can it survive its critics — and the Joint Strike Fighter? By Gordon Trowbridge Times staff writers It may be the unloveliest object of affection in military history. Stubby-winged, pug-nosed, slow as the line at the DMV, the A-10 Thunderbolt II attack jet is nobody’s idea of sexy. Yet those who fly it use “A-10” and “love” in the same sentence. But the Hawg’s ardent admirers, suspicious of their fellow airmen, have been left to angrily defend the jet since its inception in the 1970s. The rest of the Air Force, meanwhile, wonders what it is that A-10 pilots see in a plane so … retro. It may be the ultimate clash of Air Force cultures. The latest episode in the long-running drama came this spring, as the air war over Iraq was drawing to a close. Working off e-mails leaked from Air Combat Command headquarters, author Robert Coram wrote a piece in the New York Times contending the Air Force once…

2000-05-27, Jag_22: PROGRAM MONITOR HARM Upgrade Tackles GPS Jammers, Dual Seeker Design Moves Forward The Navy’s HARM program is in the process of developing three upgrades to the weapon. (US Navy photo) The US Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, CA, completed the second test firing of its AGM-88C High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) Block V last month. Fielded as a software upgrade, the “home on jam” Block V improvement was developed by HARM manufacturer Raytheon Systems Company (Lewisville, TX) in conjunction with the Navy HARM Program Management Office, PMA-242. Block V enables the anti-radar missile to attack jammers that interfere with Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation signals. The Navy will use Block V HARMs to ensure that next-generation GPS-guided munitions such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition and Joint Stand-Off Weapon will not lose their precision guidance capabilities in the face of low-cost, low-power GPS jammers. During the tests, a Navy F-18 launched a HARM against a simulated jammer. Although no…

2000-04-09, Serge Pod: Sunday, 9 April, 2000, 07:51 GMT 08:51 UK US military trial plane crashes The Osprey MV-22 has only just come into service (courtesy US Navy) A plane under development with the United States Marine Corps has crashed in a fireball while landing at an Arizona airport, killing all 19 people on board. Analysts described the accident as a serious setback for a key Pentagon development programme. Police said the MV-22 Osprey came down at about 2000 (0300 GMT) at Avra Valley Airport in Marana, west of Tucson, in fair weather. Firefighters at the crash scene Witnesses reported seeing the revolutionary plane plunge after an explosion in the sky. "It was fully engulfed and there were small explosions," said Katy Heiden, a fire service spokeswoman. Television pictures showed smoke rising from a smouldering wreckage that was lit up by lights from emergency vehicles. In a statement, President Clinton mourned a "terrible loss of life" which he said was a reminder of how many men and women in the US military put their…
