2001-06-15, Serge Pod: Eurofighter launches AMRAAM and ASRAAM 12 June 2001 The Italian Eurofighter prototype DA7 has completed a two-week series of weapons trials at the Decimomannu range on Sardinia. AMRAAM, ASRAAM and AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles were launched from the aircraft. An AMRAAM S/CTV missile (Advanced medium range Air-to-Air Missile Separation/Control Test Vehicle), an inert warhead test missile with a motor to check the separation trajectory from the aircraft was launched in level flight from a height of 3,130 feet at a speed of 0.9 Mach. The test confirmed the Eurofighter's optimum launch platform qualities and the reliability and maturity of the aircraft systems. The DA7 prototype's test cycle also included the first launch of an ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile) from a height of 5,000 feet at a speed of 0.89 Mach. This is an inert warhead operational missile fitted with the instrumentation necessary for data exchange with a Ground Station. BAE SYSTEMS has completed the load survey for the baseline…

2001-04-25, fast: larger The Horsehead nebula is silhouetted against the bright nebula, IC 434. The bright area at the top left edge is a young star April 24, 2001 Web posted at: 9:04 AM EDT (1304 GMT) (CNN) — The Hubble Space Telescope is having a birthday, but astronomy buffs are getting the gift. To commemorate the telescope's 11th year in the sky since its launch in 1990, the Hubble was aimed at the Horsehead nebula. The nebula, a popular target for amateur astronomers, was selected by Internet voters last year as an astronomical target for the Hubble. Also known as Barnard 33, the nebula comes by its nickname honestly. Its unusual shape, resembling the head of a horse, was first discovered on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. 2001-04-07, Dron: By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) — Beginning a new chapter in Mars exploration, NASA on Saturday launched a powerful new orbiter to scour the Red Planet for evidence of underground water and geologic hot spots. The $300 million Mars Odyssey should become the first spacecraft to visit Mars since two disastrous failures in 1999. Mars Odyssey will search for water, map surface minerals and measure radiation levels — observations that could provide clues about possible extraterrestrial life. < !-- ======= WRAPPER ======= --> < !-- ======= /WRAPPER ======= --> "Life on Earth was not a cosmic fluke but part of a broad imperative," Ed Weiler, NASA deputy administrator, told reporters Friday. "Mars is a lot like Earth. And billions of years ago it had some kind of atmosphere and huge quantities of flowing water." The spacecraft blasted off into clear morning skies aboard a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It should reach Mars in October after a journey of 286 million miles (460 million…

2001-03-29, Dron: PALMDALE, Calif., March 26, 2001 — Extensive ground environment tests conducted on the Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32B demonstrator last week confirmed the aircraft's short-takeoff-and-vertical-landi ng (STOVL) system operates at acoustic and temperature levels lower than predicted at full power. Mike Heinz, Boeing vice president and JSF deputy program manager, said the test data prove the Boeing STOVL ground environment is well within operational limits. "The testing verifies we meet all requirements and provide a safe operating environment for the customer," Heinz said. "We confirmed that with the X-32B at 100 percent STOVL thrust, the ground environment is at or below heat- and noise-level requirements." Ground environment tests are essential to ensure the aircraft can maintain continuous operations on takeoff and landing surfaces, and to ensure the safety of maintenance personnel working on and around the aircraft. According to Heinz, lower acoustic and vibration levels inside the aircraft provide…

2001-03-27, Dron: http://www.area51researchcenter. com/8-3-00crash3.jpg [zero size or time out] LONDON (Reuters) - Two U.S. F-15 fighters went missing on a low-flying training mission over the Scottish Highlands on Monday and rescue workers were increasingly pessimistic after reports of an explosion. "As each hour and minute goes by, we are profoundly concerned about their fate," Royal Air Force spokesman Michael Mulford told Reuters after the fighters were reported overdue. "In search and rescue, one never says never but at this point it is difficult to be anything but pessimistic," he said. Contact was lost on both radar and radio from the fighters, on a training flight from their Lakenheath base in England. "Someone has reported an explosion in the Cairngorms. We now have two Nimrod aircraft, three helicopters, two RAF mountain rescue teams and several civilian teams all searching," the spokesman said. He said there were no reports of distress beacons. "This is something of a mystery. We are very concerned about the fate…

2001-03-15, Dron: GIESSEN, Germany — A U.S. soldier has been acquitted by a U.S. Army panel in the shooting death of a 6-year-old boy in Kosovo. Nicholas Young, who was 19 and serving as a peacekeeper at the time of the accidental shooting, was on trial on charges of negligent homicide and dereliction of duty following the death of the ethnic Albanian boy. He was facing up to 3 1/2 years in prison, dishonourable discharge, reduction in rank to private and forfeiture of all pay and allowances if convicted by the panel. Young burst into tears and threw his arms around his mother as he left the courtroom. Young was part of a group of U.S. Army soldiers visiting the Gornja Slatina school in the town of Cerkes Sadorina when his M-249 squad automatic weapon discharged. Rounds from the machine gun struck Gentrit Rexhepi in the chest and arm. The boy later died at Camp Bondsteel, where Army doctors tried to save his life. Young's unit, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery, "sponsored" the school and was on a goodwill mission at…

2001-03-12, Dron: During official visit of RSK MiG representatives to Sophia (Bulgaria) both sides confirmed their mutual interest in fastest maintenance and modernization of MiG-29A fighter jets that are in service with Bulgarian Air Force. Bulgarian officials stressed on the fact that the deal must have absolutely no political context. Aside from that, Bulgaria takes no obligations related to future upgrade program of the Air Force which may include massive purchase of american equipment. International observers have mentioned that Bulgarian desperation is forced by integration with NATO which will require replacement of IFF (identification friend-or-foe) system aboard MiGs. Bulgarian Ministry of Defense is also exploring potential purchase of F-16s as possible successors to Fulcrums. [Edited by Dron, 12-03-2001]

2001-02-17, Serge Pod: Apache Longbow demonstrates aerobatics at Avalon 15 February 2001 http://defence-data.com/storypic /ah64acrobatic.jpg [not image] The multi-role AH-64D Apache Longbow combat helicopter is in the spotlight this week at Australian International Airshow 2001, performing a series of loops and rolls designed to demonstrate the aircraft's aerobatic prowess. While Apache Longbow is fully aerobatic, it doesn't need to be. The radar is capable of picking up all ground and airborne targets within an area of more than 50 square kilometres — all with a single scan. And the weapons can be aimed and fired by the crew's simply looking at the target. The Apache Longbow, produced by The Boeing Company in Mesa, Ariz., is competing for the Australian Army's Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter program, an effort known as Air 87, which will enhance Australian Army and Australian Defence Force capabilities. Boeing says Apache Longbow offers Australia a low- risk, cost-effective and off-the-shelf solution to its defence needs.…

2001-01-26, Serge Pod: SBL Team test beam director design 26 January 2001 http://defence-data.com/storypic /sblifx.jpg [not image] The Space-Based Laser Integrated Flight Experiment (SBL-IFX) has new information about how to monitor and maintain the pointing of the SBL-IFX beam director on orbit. The data was collected from a recent integrated ground test of the Alpha high-energy laser, its beam director telescope and the associated beam alignment and correction system. The beam director is the part of the Air Force and Ballistic Missile Defense Organisation's (BMDO) proposed experimental missile defence system that will project the high-energy laser beam across space and focus it on a distant boosting missile target. Team SBL-IFX, a joint venture comprising Lockheed Martin, TRW and Boeing, conducted the six-second lasing test last month at TRW's Capistrano Test Site near San Clemente in California. It was carried out as part of the team's current $240 million SBL-IFX development contract with the Air Force. The test involved…

2001-01-04, Dron: Indian brand new fighter jet successfully passed initial flight tests. According to army representatives who observed the actual flight over flight center in Bangalore, it's an enormous achievement of the national industry. Development of a light fighter jet began in India 17 years ago, however engineers faced many problems and delays in the program. Apparently, it will take another 10 years or more for the plane to enter service with Indian Air Force. India is still hoping for eventual export orders for this plane however many experts say that by the time new plane arrives to international market, it's development technology will become far too old to be competitive. 2000-12-23, Serge Pod: Boeing JSF X-32A goes supersonic 22 December 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /x32aflight.jpg [not image] The Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32A concept demonstrator aircraft broke the sound barrier yesterday, expanding the flight envelope and meeting another of the company's 'up- and-away' test objectives. Lt. Col. Edward Cabrera, US Air Force lead test pilot assigned to the Boeing X-32A test programme, took the X-32A to 30,000 feet and exceeded Mach 1.0 in achieving supersonic flight. The flight was the aircraft's 49th since its 18 September first flight. "The X-32A approached and exceeded Mach 1 effortlessly, demonstrating significant tactical potential,'' Cabrera said. "I'm very impressed with the fact that the plane continues to fly as predicted based on extensive modelling and simulation.'' Frank Statkus, Boeing vice president and JSF general manager, said the milestone puts an exclamation point on what has been an extremely productive flight-test programme to date. "As planned, we completed the…
