2000-09-12, Dron: Monday September 11 6:56 PM ET Small Planes Collide in Fla. By KARIN MEADOWS, Associated Press Writer FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) - Two small planes collided Monday and crashed into a citrus grove, killing both pilots. The collision between the twin-engine Piper Aztec and a single-engine Piper Cherokee took place about three miles west of St. Lucie International Airport. Glenn Gollnick, a tennis pro at nearby Panther Woods Country Club, said he heard a loud bang and saw one of the planes fall to earth. ``I saw something 100 to 200 feet above the trees come straight down,'' he said. ``It looked like a mass of metal.'' Gollnick, 52, said he drove a quarter-mile to the crash site and saw one plane had landed upside down while the other lay in pieces about 100 feet away. ``I was yelling and screaming, 'Is anybody in there? Are you OK?''' Gollnick said. ``There was no response.'' The Cherokee was registered to Flight Safety International, a Florida flying school. Authorities identified the pilot of the Aztec as Roger…

2000-09-07, Dron: NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet has given its go-ahead for the purchase of 10 Mirage-2000s multi-role aircraft from France, an Indian Air Force spokesman said on Monday. The Cabinet approval was accorded last week. ``These aircraft are not meant for augmenting the existing fleet. These are to make up for attrition,'' the spokesman said. The Rs 1,500-crore deal, to be signed soon, will also include purchase of spares. Defence ministry sources said the Centre had been assured by the French that the aircraft would be newly-built. The aircraft being purchased are the earlier variants Mirage-2000H and not the latest Mirage 2000-5. However, these 10 aircraft are likely to be fitted with refuelling probes, which is not available in the the present IAF Mirages. While buying the first lot of the MiGs in the mid-1980s, New Delhi had paid extra money to get removed the refuelling probes as the IAF did not envisage air-to-air refueling. The Mirage-2000s, which are equipped with both laser and TV- guided bombs, were pressed…

2000-09-05, Zed: American Plane Linked To Concorde Crash The crash of the Air France Concorde outside Paris in July may have been caused by a strip of metal from a Continental Airlines aircraft. Airline officials have confirmed to French air accident investigators that a DC-10, which took off shortly before the doomed Concorde flight, has a piece of metal missing similar to that found on the runway after the crash. Investigators believe that Concorde hit the 17-inch metal strip at nearly 200 miles an hour as it took off from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport on July 25. The impact burst a tire, shredding it into fragments of rubber that either ruptured a fuel tank or damaged the engines causing an uncontrollable fire. The supersonic aircraft crashed into an hotel two minutes later killing all 109 people on board and four on the ground. French air accident investigators said that Continental was co-operating fully with the investigation. All Concordes have been grounded until modifications can be made as, under aviation…

2000-09-05, Dron: Offcial spokesman of the "Governmental Privatization and Governmental Possession of Hungary" Co. reported today that Russian Federation expressed its interest in purchasing Hungarian MiG-21 fighters which were decomissioned from Hungarian service recently. Russia is ready to purchase (and possibly scrap) old fighters with the condition of its participation in the upcoming Hungarian MiG-29 modernization program. If the answer is positive, Russia is ready to deduct MiG-21 costs from the potential MiG-29 modernization bill. Hungarian experts say that this would quite revolutionize the problem of scraping decommissioned arms. Russia's attractive offer could be explained by the fact that certain African countries and India expressed their interest in old MiGs before. Now Russian Federation will attempt to take advantage of those requests and possibly re-sell old Hungarian MiGs to other customers. The total number of decommissioned MiGs will reach over 100 in September, when another 22 aircraft will exit the…

2000-09-05, Dron: BRISBANE (Reuters) - Eight people were killed on Tuesday when a light plane crashed in Australia's remote northeast after flying 3,000 km (1,900 miles) across the continent on apparent autopilot. The plane set out with seven miners on a short flight from Perth to the gold mining town of Leonora, both in Western Australia, but authorities believe the plane depressurized, leaving the pilot and miners unconscious. Two aircraft tracked the Beechcraft King Air 200 twin-engine turboprop from near Alice Springs in central Australia before it crashed at about 2:10 a.m. (1510 GMT) on a property near Bourketown, in far northern Queensland state, authorities said. The plane did not respond to radio contact and traveled northeast across the vast outback, flying virtually in a straight line across three states before running out of fuel and crashing. Sons of Gwalia Ltd, one of Australia's largest gold producers, said seven of its employees who worked at Leonora were on the charter flight. ``It has been confirmed that…

2000-09-01, BACKFIRE: ISS gets older before its exploitation begins FROM: 2000 Report # 40 2 p.m. CDT, Thursday, August 30, 2000 Mission Control Center, Houston, Texas With a visit by the Space Shuttle Atlantis a little over a week away, International Space Station flight controllers plan to conduct a final rehearsal of the station's activities for the upcoming docking on Tuesday. This week, station controllers completed transferring propellants from tanks aboard the attached Progress cargo craft to tanks aboard the Zvezda living quarters module. Controllers in the United States and Russia also conducted a test of the efficiency of the solar arrays on the Zvezda and Zarya modules, finding everything in good shape. An evaluation of problems with two batteries on the station — one in Zarya and one in Zvezda — continued this week, although the problems have no impact on any planned station activities. The problem exhibited by the battery in Zarya, labeled Battery 6, is consistent with normal signs of aging, and battery 6…

2000-08-29, Dron: Usual tendency for Russian Aviation Industry to prefer imported engines over their own seems to be comming to an end. This is also backed by the recent Aviadvigatel and Pratt&Whitney agreement. As a part of the contract, Pratt&Whitney expressed its highest readiness to invest over 125 millions of dollars into development of the new generation PS-90A-2 (PS-90A2) engine. The engine which is based on a state-of-the-art PS-90A and is planned to be used on various passenger airliners including Tu-204, IL-96-300 as well as IL-76 freighters which are already in service. New PS-90A2 will have higher thrust ratings, be more reliable and will have extended exploitation resource. However, new engine which is to be completed by 2003 is not actually fully-Russian. Several imported components would have to be used in the construction. This way, besides Pratt$Whitney another 10 western companies joined the project. These represent Sweden, Germany and USA. This however doesn't mean that Russia is lossing any of its…

2000-08-15, Dron: HELENA, Montana (CNN) — A pilot was killed on Sunday when his helicopter crashed while making water drops on one of many wildfires raging in the western United States. The firefighter, whose identity was not released, was battling a blaze in a remote area about 50 miles east of Fallon, Nevada, which had already consumed 37,700 acres. The pilot was the eighth firefighter killed fighting wildfires this year, and the second killed in a helicopter crash this month in Nevada. On Monday, the National Fire Information Center reported 82 large fires burning across 919,710 acres. Although firefighters contended Sunday with seven additional fires, they took satisfaction in their accomplishment.
