2001-06-03, Dron: EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, California (CNN) — The X-43A, a "hypersonic" experimental aircraft attached to a Pegasus booster rocket, failed the first of three planned test flights Saturday. The flight plan called for the X-43A to separate from the booster rocket and free-fall back to earth in about 10 seconds, landing in the Pacific Ocean. Instead, the aircraft fell directly into the ocean. The aircraft was launched 95,000 feet above the Pacific Missile Test Range here, from a NASA B-52. NASA had hoped the aircraft would reach speeds up to seven times the speed of sound, or almost 5,000 miles per hour. Two other planned test are now on hold, officials said. The hypersonic combustion engine technology, an elusive engineering goal for decades, could someday allow craft to fly 10 times faster than the speed of sound, a pace now reserved to conventional rockets. It's called "scramjet" technology, and it relies on air-breathing engines instead of rocket power to achieve its tremendous speeds. Currently, the…

2001-04-07, Dron: By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) — Beginning a new chapter in Mars exploration, NASA on Saturday launched a powerful new orbiter to scour the Red Planet for evidence of underground water and geologic hot spots. The $300 million Mars Odyssey should become the first spacecraft to visit Mars since two disastrous failures in 1999. Mars Odyssey will search for water, map surface minerals and measure radiation levels — observations that could provide clues about possible extraterrestrial life. < !-- ======= WRAPPER ======= --> < !-- ======= /WRAPPER ======= --> "Life on Earth was not a cosmic fluke but part of a broad imperative," Ed Weiler, NASA deputy administrator, told reporters Friday. "Mars is a lot like Earth. And billions of years ago it had some kind of atmosphere and huge quantities of flowing water." The spacecraft blasted off into clear morning skies aboard a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It should reach Mars in October after a journey of 286 million miles (460 million…

2001-04-05, Dron: Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, April 5, 2001; Page A01 Accused spy Robert P. Hanssen allegedly brought a D.C. stripper to religious services at his suburban Virginia church and spent at least $10,000 on a car for her in what authorities believe was a proselytizing effort, sources close to the investigation said this week. Federal investigators, who have interviewed the woman, are also examining whether Hanssen bought her an airplane ticket to Tokyo or other gifts in the early 1990s, according to law enforcement and intelligence sources. The purchases may provide important clues to what happened to some of the $600,000 in cash and diamonds that the former FBI counterintelligence agent allegedly received from Soviet and Russian governments in return for spying since 1985, according to the sources. Counterintelligence experts said that such purchases, combined with $275,000 in debt incurred by Hanssen and his wife, Bonnie, since 1992, could have provided warning signs to FBI officials that Hanssen…

2001-03-29, Dron: BELVIDERE, New Jersey (Reuters) — It was not the crime of the century when a man allegedly stole 58 cents from a car in rural New Jersey, but his trial and incarceration could end up costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Over protests from a taxpayers' advocacy group and civil libertarians, prosecutors are pressing for a prison sentence of between five and 10 years for a drifter accused of stealing the money in Greenwich, New Jersey, in 1999. In drifter Michael Monroe's defense, his attorney said he slid his hand through a slightly open window of the car to give more air to a Rottweiler dog that had been left inside by its owner. It had already cost taxpayers $16,000 to keep Monroe in prison before his trial started Monday in Warren County Superior Court, local officials said. "That's a waste of taxpayers' money for a crime that wasn't life-threatening," said Sam Perelli, state chairman of United Taxpayers of New Jersey. "For 58 cents it seems kind of crazy to prosecute him and use this…

2001-03-27, Dron: http://www.area51researchcenter. com/8-3-00crash3.jpg [zero size or time out] LONDON (Reuters) - Two U.S. F-15 fighters went missing on a low-flying training mission over the Scottish Highlands on Monday and rescue workers were increasingly pessimistic after reports of an explosion. "As each hour and minute goes by, we are profoundly concerned about their fate," Royal Air Force spokesman Michael Mulford told Reuters after the fighters were reported overdue. "In search and rescue, one never says never but at this point it is difficult to be anything but pessimistic," he said. Contact was lost on both radar and radio from the fighters, on a training flight from their Lakenheath base in England. "Someone has reported an explosion in the Cairngorms. We now have two Nimrod aircraft, three helicopters, two RAF mountain rescue teams and several civilian teams all searching," the spokesman said. He said there were no reports of distress beacons. "This is something of a mystery. We are very concerned about the fate…

2001-01-27, Dron: WASHINGTON — After bombing missions against Japanese targets in 1944, three troubled American B-29s made emergency landings at the Soviet town of Vladivostok in southeastern Russia. The U.S. pilots assumed that as allies, they would be in friendly Russian hands. But they were wrong. "They didn't realize what was going to happen to the airplanes. But when you're on fire, you look for a place to land," said George Larson, the editor of "Air and Space/Smithsonian Magazine." Soviet leader Joseph Stalin eventually released the crews, but he ordered the B-29 Superfortresses seized and copied. He put his security chief Lavrenty Beria in charge of thousands of engineers and workers — using fear and patriotism to drive the project. Failure could land workers in exile in Siberia. < !-- ======= WRAPPER ======= --> < !-- ======= /WRAPPER ======= --> The crews dismantled one of the planes into 105,000 parts, created blueprints and then reproduced the bomber in just two years. 2001-01-26, Serge Pod: SBL Team test beam director design 26 January 2001 http://defence-data.com/storypic /sblifx.jpg [not image] The Space-Based Laser Integrated Flight Experiment (SBL-IFX) has new information about how to monitor and maintain the pointing of the SBL-IFX beam director on orbit. The data was collected from a recent integrated ground test of the Alpha high-energy laser, its beam director telescope and the associated beam alignment and correction system. The beam director is the part of the Air Force and Ballistic Missile Defense Organisation's (BMDO) proposed experimental missile defence system that will project the high-energy laser beam across space and focus it on a distant boosting missile target. Team SBL-IFX, a joint venture comprising Lockheed Martin, TRW and Boeing, conducted the six-second lasing test last month at TRW's Capistrano Test Site near San Clemente in California. It was carried out as part of the team's current $240 million SBL-IFX development contract with the Air Force. The test involved…

2000-12-23, Serge Pod: Boeing JSF X-32A goes supersonic 22 December 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /x32aflight.jpg [not image] The Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32A concept demonstrator aircraft broke the sound barrier yesterday, expanding the flight envelope and meeting another of the company's 'up- and-away' test objectives. Lt. Col. Edward Cabrera, US Air Force lead test pilot assigned to the Boeing X-32A test programme, took the X-32A to 30,000 feet and exceeded Mach 1.0 in achieving supersonic flight. The flight was the aircraft's 49th since its 18 September first flight. "The X-32A approached and exceeded Mach 1 effortlessly, demonstrating significant tactical potential,'' Cabrera said. "I'm very impressed with the fact that the plane continues to fly as predicted based on extensive modelling and simulation.'' Frank Statkus, Boeing vice president and JSF general manager, said the milestone puts an exclamation point on what has been an extremely productive flight-test programme to date. "As planned, we completed the…

2000-12-21, Serge Pod: KC-10 Tanker Refuels X-32A Joint Strike Fighter (Source : US Department of Defense ; issued Dec. 20, 2000) EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.---The Joint Strike Fighter program reached a significant milestone here Dec. 19 when a KC-10 Extender from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., performed the first aerial refueling of Boeing's X-32A Joint Strike Fighter concept demonstrator. http://www.defense-aerospace.com /data/.../data/2000Dec4268/JSF01 .jpg [not image] The Travis crew, part of the 6th Air Refueling Squadron, joined people from Edwards' 418th Flight Test Squadron for the X-32A's 40th sortie. A five-month test period began here Sept. 18. This mission involved three contacts between the X-32A and the KC-10. Because the X-32A is the Navy's JSF version, the KC-10 was required to refuel the X-32A with a drogue and probe. This required X-32A lead test pilot Cmdr. Phil Yates to carefully maneuver the fighter's refueling probe to a basket receptacle that flies freely behind the tanker. Even though probe and drogue…
