2000-12-12, Serge Pod: Boeing completes JSF X-32B structural mode tests 12 December 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /jsfboex32.jpg [not image] Boeing has completed structural mode interaction (SMI) testing of its X-32B concept demonstrator, moving a step closer to first flight. During SMI testing, the aircraft's flight control surfaces are moved at varying frequencies. This evaluation ensures special filters added to the flight control system are functioning properly to prevent vibration in other aircraft components. The X-32B, which is expected to fly during the first quarter of 2001, will validate the Boeing direct-lift approach to short take-off vertical landing (STOVL) flight, one of three customer requirements in the Concept Demonstration Phase of the program. "Completion of the SMI tests is another positive step as we continue to validate our design," said Katy Fleming, Boeing JSF system test director. "We're making great progress; these tests reduce risk and help confirm that we are ready to begin a safe and…

2000-12-06, Dron: http://www.wargamer.com/sp/milit ary/aircraft/mig-21/mig-21-101.j pg [not image] Russia and Croatia are planning to increase their military co-operation. Among high-priority points here may be modernization of MiG-21 fighter jets in service with Croation Air Force. Payment for the service could be both financial and material. There is a possibility that a part of modernization bill will be used to settle 1 billion 600 million Soviet debt to Yugoslavia. According to UN resolution, Croatia is eligible for about 28% of this sum therefore Russia will have a chance to earn cash and pay off debts while Croatia will get its air force fixed and tighten relations with an old friend. 2000-12-03, Serge Pod: The Gripen solution for Hungary 1 December 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /gripenhung.jpg [not image] SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS Gripen's response to the Hungarian government's request for information (RFI) for the modernisation of the Hungarian Air Force has proposed a solution based on the supply of up to 24 NATO-interoperable Gripen fourth-generation fighters, supported by a flexible finance package and an industrial co-operation programme. The aircraft would be delivered from 2005. Gripen says the specific benefits to Hungary would be: From 2005, the delivery of up to 24 fourth-generation NATO-interoperable Gripen fighters, (including four two-seater variants) which will form the core of Hungary's modernised air force to fulfil its national defence and NATO requirements. Linked to the procurement of Gripen, an opportunity to stimulate Hugarian industry in both the commercial and defence sectors through the development of strategic partnerships with key European companies. A long-term and flexible finance…

2000-11-29, Serge Pod: SGI Su-22 simulator for Czech Air Force 28 November 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /su22c.jpg [not image] The Czech Air Forces is using SGI(TM) visualisation and supercomputing technology to help train its pilots at Namest nad Oslavou. SGI, in conjunction with Virtual Reality Media and Letecke opravny Kbely, helped to develop a fully reconfigurable simulator modelled on the Russian Sukhoi Su-22 attack aircraft. The system is based on Silicon Graphics Onyx2, with three InfiniteReality2(TM) graphics subsystems. The Su-22 simulator also includes a complete set of mathematical models for all aircraft systems as defined by FAA category D, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems, instruments and indicators, and over-pressure simulation which is created by using anti-G-force trousers. "IT now plays an important educational role in all modern armies, and the implementation of the Su-22 flight simulator will help to bring the Czech Air Forces' training programme up to NATO standards," said Michal Klimes, SGI…

2000-11-24, Serge Pod: Indian order for Hawk trainer edges closer 24 November 2000 The Indian Defence Minister, George Fernandes, has told the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament that India is close to ordering 66 Hawk advanced jet trainers. According to Fernades, negotiations with BAE SYSTEMS, the manufacturer of the aircraft, are close to success. At present India has no intermediate training aircraft in which pilots can transition from basic training to fast jets in the Indian Air Force. As a consequence the IAF has a very high fatal accident record as inexperienced pilots learn 'on the job'. http://defence-data.com/storypic /hawksnow.jpg [not image] Hawk fighters The Indian Hawk purchase saga has been going on for sixteen years, but has been hampered by on/off diplomatic relations, recessions in the Indian economy and, more recently a concern that if bought, the aircraft would not be subject to sanctions imposed by third parties. Some Hawk technology is US in origin and therefore subject to sanctions imposed in the…

2000-10-22, Dron: KIEV, 18 OCTOBER-2000. /ITAR-TASS/. During the ongoing testing program of the AN-70 freighter, fascinating performance characteristics have been acheived. The AN-70 became the only airplane of its kind capable of maintaining stable flight at speeds as low as 98km/h(!!!). According to OKB Antonov media service, for the first time in history of aviation, a 120-ton monster airship conquered speeds acheivable previously only on ultra-light planes. Joint Russian-Ukrainian pilot teams reached astonishing AOA of 30 degrees which is accessible only to highly advanced fighter jets of today. Also, immitated engine-failure never resulted in stalling/spinning etc. The AOA test results indicate that the aircraft remains manually conrolable under most extreme conditions and therefore is completely safe in all flight modes and completely satisfy National standards for new-generation airlift. 2000-10-07, Dron: MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - At least six people were killed on Friday when an Aeromexico DC-9 carrying 83 people plowed into houses and vehicles in heavy rain after careering off the runway in northern Mexico, officials said. A Red Cross spokesman in the town of Reynosa in Tamaulipas state near the U.S. border told local radio six people on the ground were killed and up to 11 injured, contradicting early reports of some 40 casualties. Jose Manuel Diaz de Rivera, spokesman for Aeromexico, run by government-owned Cintra (CINTRAA.MX), said those who died were on the ground and that no passengers were killed. ``Five passengers and one crew member were slightly injured and taken to hospitals nearby,'' he noted. He said there were 83 people on board. Initial radio reports said the plane was carrying around 100 people. A spokesman for the airport said the accident was caused by heavy rainfall. Toffic Salum, director of Tamaulipas civil protection, said: ``It (the plane) crashed into houses near the runway.'' Over the…

2000-09-30, Dron: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy jetfighter was missing in the Gulf on Friday and presumed to have crashed in an accident shortly after taking off on a training flight from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the Navy said. The ship, on patrol in waters off Iraq, lost radio contact with the pilot of the single-seat F/A-18C after it took off to conduct a carrier-landing proficiency flight, according to a Navy spokeswoman at the Pentagon (news - web sites). Lt. Cmdr. Dawn Cutler told Reuters the plane apparently went down at about 9:30 a.m. Gulf time and that a search and rescue mission was under way from the carrier and other U.S. naval units in the area. Iraq said its air defense forces had shot down the plane. ``It is worth noting that every time the US military command is forced to admit that a jet has crashed, it says the reason for the crash was a technical malfunction, while the real reason for the crash is because the planes were hit by the heroic Iraqi defenses' fire,'' Iraqi radio said. Iraqi…

2000-07-12, Serge Pod: Boost For Russia`s Space Programme Russian rocket engineers said on Tuesday they were confident the mysterious fuel pressure loss during last week’s test launch of a Proton rocket was a one-off event and were confident that there was nothing to worry about prior to the crucial launch of the ISS’ cornerstone – Zvezda Module. The only thing the Russian space engineers were worried about before the launch was Wednesday morning’s weather forecast. “It was not really good, there is a chance of thunderstorms,” they told reporters. However, the sun was shining and the sky was clear blue when the Proton rocket carrying the Zvesda ISS module bound for the International space station was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Chief of the U.S. space agency NASA Dan Goldin attended the launch together with Yury Koptev of Russia's Space Agency. Later Goldin said the event was a triumph of Russia's will and commitment to ISS project. “The Russians have gone through all sorts of difficulty with their…

2000-05-27, Jag_22: PROGRAM MONITOR HARM Upgrade Tackles GPS Jammers, Dual Seeker Design Moves Forward The Navy’s HARM program is in the process of developing three upgrades to the weapon. (US Navy photo) The US Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, CA, completed the second test firing of its AGM-88C High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) Block V last month. Fielded as a software upgrade, the “home on jam” Block V improvement was developed by HARM manufacturer Raytheon Systems Company (Lewisville, TX) in conjunction with the Navy HARM Program Management Office, PMA-242. Block V enables the anti-radar missile to attack jammers that interfere with Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation signals. The Navy will use Block V HARMs to ensure that next-generation GPS-guided munitions such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition and Joint Stand-Off Weapon will not lose their precision guidance capabilities in the face of low-cost, low-power GPS jammers. During the tests, a Navy F-18 launched a HARM against a simulated jammer. Although no…

2000-04-05, Serge Pod: USAF tests Swiss developed liquid-filled anti-G suit 5 April 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /gsuit.jpg [not image] The US Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California is testing a new concept in aircrew protection, a liquid-filled, full-body anti-gravity suit being developed by a Swiss company, Life Support Systems AG. Testing of the "Libelle" anti-G suit is a collaborative effort by TPS, Air Combat Command's Humans Systems Integration Division and the Air Expeditionary Force Battlelab at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. During high-G acceleration forces, much of a pilot's blood is pushed towards the body's lower half. In just seconds, a shift in blood volume away from the brain can cause a blackout. To counter the phenomenon, fighter aircrew use pneumatic (compressed air) anti-G suits. Using hydrostatic (liquid) force to regulate suit pressure, the Swiss anti-G suit could prove better than current pneumatic anti-G suits. Life Support Systems has been developing the Libelle concept for…

2000-04-01, Serge Pod: Turkish glass cockpit S70A in flight test http://defence-data.com/storypic /seahks70.jpg [not image] 31 March 2000 The first S70A-28D Turkish Glass Cockpit BLACK HAWK helicopter made its initial flight last month. Over the next 14 months, Sikorsky will deliver 30 glass cockpit BLACK HAWKs to the Turkish Land Forces (TLF) and eight glass cockpit SEAHAWKs to the Turkish Navy (TN). During the same time period, Sikorsky will re-configure the 20 TLF BLACK HAWKs delivered in 1999 to the glass cockpit configuration in Ankara, Turkey. S70A In mid-1998, Sikorsky and the Republic of Turkey agreed to incorporate a Sikorsky/Rockwell Collins glass cockpit into eight Turkish SEAHAWKs and in February 1999 they finalized the agreement to incorporate the glass cockpit into 50 Turkish BLACK HAWKs. The foundation of the cockpit system is four Multi-function Displays (MFDs) for presentation of pilotage and mission system information and two Control Display Units (CDUs) for flight and mission management. Initially, the MFD and…
