2001-02-17, Serge Pod: Apache Longbow demonstrates aerobatics at Avalon 15 February 2001 http://defence-data.com/storypic /ah64acrobatic.jpg [not image] The multi-role AH-64D Apache Longbow combat helicopter is in the spotlight this week at Australian International Airshow 2001, performing a series of loops and rolls designed to demonstrate the aircraft's aerobatic prowess. While Apache Longbow is fully aerobatic, it doesn't need to be. The radar is capable of picking up all ground and airborne targets within an area of more than 50 square kilometres — all with a single scan. And the weapons can be aimed and fired by the crew's simply looking at the target. The Apache Longbow, produced by The Boeing Company in Mesa, Ariz., is competing for the Australian Army's Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter program, an effort known as Air 87, which will enhance Australian Army and Australian Defence Force capabilities. Boeing says Apache Longbow offers Australia a low- risk, cost-effective and off-the-shelf solution to its defence needs.…

2001-02-03, Serge Pod: IAI develops MI-8 & MI-17 tactical upgrade package 2 February 2001 A modular Tactical Upgrade Package for modernising the Russian MI-8 and MI-17 helicopters has been developed by Israel Aircraft Industries, Ltd. (IAI). These assault helicopters, manufactured in the thousands, are in operational service in many countries. Most of them, however, require upgrading to enable them to operate effectively in modern battlefield conditions. IAI's upgrade package includes a modular Avionics System based on the "Glass Cockpit" concept, an Electronic Warfare suit, and a flexible armament package. The Lahav Division's upgrade uses subsystems, which were designed for the Russian MI-35 and KA-50-2 attack helicopters, and so achieves a common architecture for both assault and attack helicopters. http://defence-data.com/storypic /mi17glasscockpit.jpg [not image] The new glass cockpit The upgrade transforms the old cockpit into modern computerised crew stations, which include multifunction electronic displays that enable the…

2001-01-14, Serge Pod: F-16 test aircraft is retired 11 January 2001 http://defence-data.com/storypic /aftif16.jpg [not image] F-16 serial number 75-0750 has completed a distinguished career as an advanced technology test aircraft for more than 22 years. It is best known for its service as the Advanced Fighter Technology Integration (AFTI)/F-16 technology demonstrator since the early 1980s. Aircraft 750 flew its final flight on Jan. 9, 2001 from its birthplace in Fort Worth, Texas, to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where it will be retired and placed in the Air Force Museum there. AFTI/F-16 "The AFTI/F-16 has been an excellent platform because of the F-16's basic modern systems, the relative ease of incorporating advanced technologies and the F-16's low cost of operation and maintenance," said Don Swihart, AFTI Programme Manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton. "The AFTI/ F-16 has been a real workhorse in proving advanced fighter technologies, and it is fitting that this aircraft have its final…

2001-01-04, Dron: Indian brand new fighter jet successfully passed initial flight tests. According to army representatives who observed the actual flight over flight center in Bangalore, it's an enormous achievement of the national industry. Development of a light fighter jet began in India 17 years ago, however engineers faced many problems and delays in the program. Apparently, it will take another 10 years or more for the plane to enter service with Indian Air Force. India is still hoping for eventual export orders for this plane however many experts say that by the time new plane arrives to international market, it's development technology will become far too old to be competitive. 2000-12-06, Dron: Military jets of the IAF heavily abused Lebanon borders yesterday and penetrated deep into foreign airspace. According to El Mundo, these planes flew over southern and western parts of the Lebanon. Local police mentioned that low-level supersonic pass-overs caused panic among local civilians. This demonstration of military power took place only several days after USA and Israel called for Syria and Lebanon to take measures against anti-jew protests of Khesbollah extremists in these countries. 2000-12-03, Serge Pod: Airbus Military selects engine for A400M 1 December 2000 It seems the Airbus Military Company (AMC) has bowed to political pressure, rather than commercial wisdom, in selecting the engine for the A400M military transport aircraft. Yesterday it announced that "Following a full and thorough evaluation of the engines on offer, ... the engine selected for the A400M will be the TP400, to be jointly developed and manufactured by a European consortium." http://defence-data.com/storypic /a400ma1.jpg [not image] A400M At the Farnborough Air Show, following the launch of the A400M. AMC said they were aware of the possibility of a joint bid being made for the lucrative engine portion of the contract. However, AMC were adamant that since the whole concept of the A400M was based on commercial best practice, AMC would reserve the right to select the engine competitively. At that stage there were already two proposals, one from Rolls-Royce and one from Turbo prop International. The development of a joint venture for the…

2000-11-17, Serge Pod: Boeing JSF X-32a begins simulated carrier landing tests 16 November 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /jsfxa1sm.jpg [zero size or time out] The Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32A concept demonstrator aircraft has begun field carrier landing practice (FCLP) tests to demonstrate flying and handling qualities during low-speed aircraft carrier approach. This is the first flight since the X-32A was grounded after a hydraulics failure caused an unscheduled landing on a dry lake bed at Edwards AFB. Engineers said they have found an interim fix to the problem and hope to have a final solution by the end of the month.. US Navy Cmdr. Phillip 'Rowdy' Yates, the US government's lead test pilot for the Boeing JSF program, and Boeing lead test pilot Fred Knox are demonstrating simulated carrier landings using a Frensel lens on the ground to provide pilot cues during their approaches to a simulated carrier deck outlined on a runway at Edwards Air Force Base. 2000-11-15, Dron: According to several reports, Ministry of Defence of Russia declared Mi-28 as the primary assault helicopter for its chopper fleet. The decision is to be finalized and become official in December. Main contenders are Ka-50 and Mi-28. Earlier, MoD was leaning towards more elegant and reliable Ka-50 Werewolf, however fire power and greater armour has always been always given priority. Most important factor traditionally is crew-safety where Mi-28 proved to be superior. Currently, OKB Mil is also running massive Mi-24 modernization funded by MoD. One of offered versions Mi-24VK-1 with night-vision equipment is already on tests in Moscow. By December another version designated Mi-24VK-2 will join the program. Besides that, OKB Mil is still testing night version of Mi-8 transport helicopters 4 of which are earning combat hours in a fight against religious maniacs in Chechnya. 2000-10-24, Dron: The Head of Indian Air Force decided to check MIG-21 personally, "in order to stop recent gossips about unreliability of this plane once and for all". Anil Yashvant Tipnis conducted a flight this Monday on MiG-21 fighter and immediately after the landing announced that the MIG-21 remains "unbeatable and excellent airplane". The marshal flew his sortie exactly the same day as local media published statistics according to which in the past 5 years, National Air Force lost 84 combat planes, 60 of which were MiG-21s. The result of this are deaths of 34 pilots.  Experts claim however that majority of accidents is classified as "pilot error". The problem is that India has no supersonic trainers, so rookie pilots are given MiG-21s to practice on, which require good skills and expertise.  MiG-21 fighter had been produced at Nasik aviation production plant. Right now, upgrades are underway for production of multifunctional Su-30MKI jets.
