2000-12-12, Serge Pod: Boeing completes JSF X-32B structural mode tests 12 December 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /jsfboex32.jpg [not image] Boeing has completed structural mode interaction (SMI) testing of its X-32B concept demonstrator, moving a step closer to first flight. During SMI testing, the aircraft's flight control surfaces are moved at varying frequencies. This evaluation ensures special filters added to the flight control system are functioning properly to prevent vibration in other aircraft components. The X-32B, which is expected to fly during the first quarter of 2001, will validate the Boeing direct-lift approach to short take-off vertical landing (STOVL) flight, one of three customer requirements in the Concept Demonstration Phase of the program. "Completion of the SMI tests is another positive step as we continue to validate our design," said Katy Fleming, Boeing JSF system test director. "We're making great progress; these tests reduce risk and help confirm that we are ready to begin a safe and…

2000-12-06, Dron: Military jets of the IAF heavily abused Lebanon borders yesterday and penetrated deep into foreign airspace. According to El Mundo, these planes flew over southern and western parts of the Lebanon. Local police mentioned that low-level supersonic pass-overs caused panic among local civilians. This demonstration of military power took place only several days after USA and Israel called for Syria and Lebanon to take measures against anti-jew protests of Khesbollah extremists in these countries. 2000-12-03, Serge Pod: Airbus Military selects engine for A400M 1 December 2000 It seems the Airbus Military Company (AMC) has bowed to political pressure, rather than commercial wisdom, in selecting the engine for the A400M military transport aircraft. Yesterday it announced that "Following a full and thorough evaluation of the engines on offer, ... the engine selected for the A400M will be the TP400, to be jointly developed and manufactured by a European consortium." http://defence-data.com/storypic /a400ma1.jpg [not image] A400M At the Farnborough Air Show, following the launch of the A400M. AMC said they were aware of the possibility of a joint bid being made for the lucrative engine portion of the contract. However, AMC were adamant that since the whole concept of the A400M was based on commercial best practice, AMC would reserve the right to select the engine competitively. At that stage there were already two proposals, one from Rolls-Royce and one from Turbo prop International. The development of a joint venture for the…

2000-11-29, Serge Pod: SGI Su-22 simulator for Czech Air Force 28 November 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /su22c.jpg [not image] The Czech Air Forces is using SGI(TM) visualisation and supercomputing technology to help train its pilots at Namest nad Oslavou. SGI, in conjunction with Virtual Reality Media and Letecke opravny Kbely, helped to develop a fully reconfigurable simulator modelled on the Russian Sukhoi Su-22 attack aircraft. The system is based on Silicon Graphics Onyx2, with three InfiniteReality2(TM) graphics subsystems. The Su-22 simulator also includes a complete set of mathematical models for all aircraft systems as defined by FAA category D, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems, instruments and indicators, and over-pressure simulation which is created by using anti-G-force trousers. "IT now plays an important educational role in all modern armies, and the implementation of the Su-22 flight simulator will help to bring the Czech Air Forces' training programme up to NATO standards," said Michal Klimes, SGI…

2000-11-15, Dron: According to several reports, Ministry of Defence of Russia declared Mi-28 as the primary assault helicopter for its chopper fleet. The decision is to be finalized and become official in December. Main contenders are Ka-50 and Mi-28. Earlier, MoD was leaning towards more elegant and reliable Ka-50 Werewolf, however fire power and greater armour has always been always given priority. Most important factor traditionally is crew-safety where Mi-28 proved to be superior. Currently, OKB Mil is also running massive Mi-24 modernization funded by MoD. One of offered versions Mi-24VK-1 with night-vision equipment is already on tests in Moscow. By December another version designated Mi-24VK-2 will join the program. Besides that, OKB Mil is still testing night version of Mi-8 transport helicopters 4 of which are earning combat hours in a fight against religious maniacs in Chechnya. 2000-10-24, Dron: The Head of Indian Air Force decided to check MIG-21 personally, "in order to stop recent gossips about unreliability of this plane once and for all". Anil Yashvant Tipnis conducted a flight this Monday on MiG-21 fighter and immediately after the landing announced that the MIG-21 remains "unbeatable and excellent airplane". The marshal flew his sortie exactly the same day as local media published statistics according to which in the past 5 years, National Air Force lost 84 combat planes, 60 of which were MiG-21s. The result of this are deaths of 34 pilots.  Experts claim however that majority of accidents is classified as "pilot error". The problem is that India has no supersonic trainers, so rookie pilots are given MiG-21s to practice on, which require good skills and expertise.  MiG-21 fighter had been produced at Nasik aviation production plant. Right now, upgrades are underway for production of multifunctional Su-30MKI jets.

2000-09-30, Dron: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy jetfighter was missing in the Gulf on Friday and presumed to have crashed in an accident shortly after taking off on a training flight from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the Navy said. The ship, on patrol in waters off Iraq, lost radio contact with the pilot of the single-seat F/A-18C after it took off to conduct a carrier-landing proficiency flight, according to a Navy spokeswoman at the Pentagon (news - web sites). Lt. Cmdr. Dawn Cutler told Reuters the plane apparently went down at about 9:30 a.m. Gulf time and that a search and rescue mission was under way from the carrier and other U.S. naval units in the area. Iraq said its air defense forces had shot down the plane. ``It is worth noting that every time the US military command is forced to admit that a jet has crashed, it says the reason for the crash was a technical malfunction, while the real reason for the crash is because the planes were hit by the heroic Iraqi defenses' fire,'' Iraqi radio said. Iraqi…

2000-07-12, Serge Pod: Boost For Russia`s Space Programme Russian rocket engineers said on Tuesday they were confident the mysterious fuel pressure loss during last week’s test launch of a Proton rocket was a one-off event and were confident that there was nothing to worry about prior to the crucial launch of the ISS’ cornerstone – Zvezda Module. The only thing the Russian space engineers were worried about before the launch was Wednesday morning’s weather forecast. “It was not really good, there is a chance of thunderstorms,” they told reporters. However, the sun was shining and the sky was clear blue when the Proton rocket carrying the Zvesda ISS module bound for the International space station was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Chief of the U.S. space agency NASA Dan Goldin attended the launch together with Yury Koptev of Russia's Space Agency. Later Goldin said the event was a triumph of Russia's will and commitment to ISS project. “The Russians have gone through all sorts of difficulty with their…

2000-04-05, Serge Pod: USAF tests Swiss developed liquid-filled anti-G suit 5 April 2000 http://defence-data.com/storypic /gsuit.jpg [not image] The US Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California is testing a new concept in aircrew protection, a liquid-filled, full-body anti-gravity suit being developed by a Swiss company, Life Support Systems AG. Testing of the "Libelle" anti-G suit is a collaborative effort by TPS, Air Combat Command's Humans Systems Integration Division and the Air Expeditionary Force Battlelab at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. During high-G acceleration forces, much of a pilot's blood is pushed towards the body's lower half. In just seconds, a shift in blood volume away from the brain can cause a blackout. To counter the phenomenon, fighter aircrew use pneumatic (compressed air) anti-G suits. Using hydrostatic (liquid) force to regulate suit pressure, the Swiss anti-G suit could prove better than current pneumatic anti-G suits. Life Support Systems has been developing the Libelle concept for…

2000-04-01, Serge Pod: Turkish glass cockpit S70A in flight test http://defence-data.com/storypic /seahks70.jpg [not image] 31 March 2000 The first S70A-28D Turkish Glass Cockpit BLACK HAWK helicopter made its initial flight last month. Over the next 14 months, Sikorsky will deliver 30 glass cockpit BLACK HAWKs to the Turkish Land Forces (TLF) and eight glass cockpit SEAHAWKs to the Turkish Navy (TN). During the same time period, Sikorsky will re-configure the 20 TLF BLACK HAWKs delivered in 1999 to the glass cockpit configuration in Ankara, Turkey. S70A In mid-1998, Sikorsky and the Republic of Turkey agreed to incorporate a Sikorsky/Rockwell Collins glass cockpit into eight Turkish SEAHAWKs and in February 1999 they finalized the agreement to incorporate the glass cockpit into 50 Turkish BLACK HAWKs. The foundation of the cockpit system is four Multi-function Displays (MFDs) for presentation of pilotage and mission system information and two Control Display Units (CDUs) for flight and mission management. Initially, the MFD and…
