Batteries for electric vehicles will cost GM about $10,000 each, which means the vehicles they power will either be too expensive for many consumers, must be subsidized with government tax breaks or sold at a loss. The Volt should qualify for as much as $7,500 in tax credits that could cut the vehicle's sticker price, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said.
With the financial situation at GM, it is not the ideal time to invest in a key manufacturing specialty, Lutz said.
"We feel it is something we absolutely have to do," he said. "Nobody's working on the next-generation great big V-8 engine anymore."
