USS Kawishiwi AO-146

I am not sure if the USS OKC picture was taken the day we gave it a good black-oil washdown (if you remember my Memory Shop story), but very likely. A black day for Capt Wyand, I am sure .  Kawishiwi had role as secondary recovery ship for the Apollo-15 splashdown. It gave us a good ringside seat. And it was fun practicing picking up a floating Apollo capsule.  (NASA loaned us one; let me tell you, it is close to impossible to drive a 38,000 ton ship in open water & stop it dead alongside a floating capsule. // Дальше — navy.memorieshop.com

This is the first Soviet spy trawler to show up, the Pelorus, or should I say the Pelorusty. Later on it was joined by a large spy ship the Zaporoshde. Both ships were later chased off by the Navy who sent an F15 fighter plane. At the end of the survey, the Russians were back with another spy trawler, apparently after we accidentally airgunned their submarine.

This is the second of 2 Soviet spy trawlers that followed us during our surveys. There is no name visable on it. This is the trawler that sank in the severe storm at the end of our last survey. It caught a huge wave trying to follow us and capsized and sank. We all cried over this awful accident.

This is the 2nd spy trawler that followed us. I wish I could get its name as it was the one that was lost in a terrible storm. The storm was so bad that it sunk numerous fishing vessels and forced us to end our survey early. When it went down, you could see its screw pointing straight up, slowly turning as it slipped between the waves, going straight down.

This is the first USSR spy trawler, the Pelorus, that pestered us for weeks. As you can see it is definately a spy ship. Antennas galore and no fishing gear. Another thing to note: the Soviets did NOT take very good care of their boats. They always looked like filthy rust buckets. I went on a Soviet ship once and the smell could make a clock run backwards and then melt.

Deploying seismic gear while the Soviets look on from their spy ship just off the stern of the Hayes. Their presence caused us a lot of problems with deploying gear. After they finally left us along, we were able to resume surveying. Unfortunately for them, they decided to follow us with a submarine. Big mistake! The airgun went off about 2 or 3 times and then a Bathoom-a-chung. We retrieved the airgun and it was damaged. It had gone off against the hull of a submarine. It surfaced and sent threatening messages and the USSR going to sue us for damaging their sonarmens' eardrums. I never was able to get a photo of the sub and mainly heard about it via the Senior Scientist.

This is a large Soviet spy ship, the Zaporoshde. Given its configuration it is likely a SIGINT ship for gathering signals intellegence. It dogged us for about a week before the figured out we were actually doing pure research and not tracking submarines or laying down sensor arrays.

This is a closeup of the USSR ship Zaporoshde. They came very close to us on several occasions and created a collision hazard. They were bound and determined to prevent us from laying down any kind of array to track their subs.

The spy ship Zaporoshde makes a very close approach to our stern while we were attempting to deploy our magnetometer and siesmic snake. They finally backed off when they saw what we were doing and sailed away to not return. It was impossible to do our research because we couldn't deploy while they were there.

The spy ship Zaporoshde 100 yards from our stern. Between it, a trawler and the Bear, there was a lot of activity going on. Apparently they were finally convinced that we were just doing science, they started to back off. Then an F15 out of Keflavic showed up and blasted just over their ships at about mach 2. That really got their attention and decided to leave. I was asleep in my stateroom and it was really loud and woke me up. When the hell was that! I went out on deck and found out what happened. The F15 was gone and the Russkies were making smoke getting out of Dodge.
