2001-02-17, Serge Pod: ~~~Apache Longbow demonstrates aerobatics at Avalon 15 February 2001 The multi-role AH-64D Apache Longbow combat helicopter is in the spotlight this week at Australian International Airshow 2001, performing a series of loops and rolls designed to demonstrate the aircraft's aerobatic prowess. While Apache Longbow is fully aerobatic, it doesn't need to be. The radar is capable of picking up all ground and airborne targets within an area of more than 50 square kilometres -- all with a single scan. And the weapons can be aimed and fired by the crew's simply looking at the target. The Apache Longbow, produced by The Boeing Company in Mesa, Ariz., is competing for the Australian Army's Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter program, an effort known as Air 87, which will enhance Australian Army and Australian Defence Force capabilities. Boeing says Apache Longbow offers Australia a low- risk, cost-effective and off-the-shelf solution to its defence needs. The AH-64D Apache Longbow is the newest version of the…

2000-12-23, Serge Pod: ~~~Boeing JSF X-32A goes supersonic 22 December 2000 The Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32A concept demonstrator aircraft broke the sound barrier yesterday, expanding the flight envelope and meeting another of the company's 'up- and-away' test objectives. Lt. Col. Edward Cabrera, US Air Force lead test pilot assigned to the Boeing X-32A test programme, took the X-32A to 30,000 feet and exceeded Mach 1.0 in achieving supersonic flight. The flight was the aircraft's 49th since its 18 September first flight. "The X-32A approached and exceeded Mach 1 effortlessly, demonstrating significant tactical potential,'' Cabrera said. "I'm very impressed with the fact that the plane continues to fly as predicted based on extensive modelling and simulation.'' Frank Statkus, Boeing vice president and JSF general manager, said the milestone puts an exclamation point on what has been an extremely productive flight-test programme to date. "As planned, we completed the customer-required test objectives before moving on to our…

2000-12-12, Serge Pod: ~~~Boeing completes JSF X-32B structural mode tests 12 December 2000 Boeing has completed structural mode interaction (SMI) testing of its X-32B concept demonstrator, moving a step closer to first flight. During SMI testing, the aircraft's flight control surfaces are moved at varying frequencies. This evaluation ensures special filters added to the flight control system are functioning properly to prevent vibration in other aircraft components. The X-32B, which is expected to fly during the first quarter of 2001, will validate the Boeing direct-lift approach to short take-off vertical landing (STOVL) flight, one of three customer requirements in the Concept Demonstration Phase of the program. "Completion of the SMI tests is another positive step as we continue to validate our design," said Katy Fleming, Boeing JSF system test director. "We're making great progress; these tests reduce risk and help confirm that we are ready to begin a safe and productive X-32B flight-test program." Conventional takeoff and…

2000-12-03, Serge Pod: ~~~Airbus Military selects engine for A400M 1 December 2000 It seems the Airbus Military Company (AMC) has bowed to political pressure, rather than commercial wisdom, in selecting the engine for the A400M military transport aircraft. Yesterday it announced that "Following a full and thorough evaluation of the engines on offer, ... the engine selected for the A400M will be the TP400, to be jointly developed and manufactured by a European consortium." A400M At the Farnborough Air Show, following the launch of the A400M. AMC said they were aware of the possibility of a joint bid being made for the lucrative engine portion of the contract. However, AMC were adamant that since the whole concept of the A400M was based on commercial best practice, AMC would reserve the right to select the engine competitively. At that stage there were already two proposals, one from Rolls-Royce and one from Turbo prop International. The development of a joint venture for the A400M engine was thought likely only if there was…

2000-11-15, Dron: ~~~ According to several reports, Ministry of Defence of Russia declared Mi-28 as the primary assault helicopter for its chopper fleet. The decision is to be finalized and become official in December. Main contenders are Ka-50 and Mi-28. Earlier, MoD was leaning towards more elegant and reliable Ka-50 Werewolf, however fire power and greater armour has always been always given priority. Most important factor traditionally is crew-safety where Mi-28 proved to be superior. Currently, OKB Mil is also running massive Mi-24 modernization funded by MoD. One of offered versions Mi-24VK-1 with night-vision equipment is already on tests in Moscow. By December another version designated Mi-24VK-2 will join the program. Besides that, OKB Mil is still testing night version of Mi-8 transport helicopters 4 of which are earning combat hours in a fight against religious maniacs in Chechnya. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Dron (edited 16-11-2000).]

2000-11-01, Dron: ~~~ Stealth secrets feared stolen PAUL SHUKOVSKY SEATTLE P-I REPORTER Oct. 30 - A Russian mathematician who was given access to an American supercomputer loaded with stealth warplane design software is under investigation for espionage. FEDERAL AGENTS SUSPECT that Aleksey Yeremin, who logged on to the supercomputer from Moscow, took advantage of Lockheed Martin and military security lapses to steal stealth technology secrets. The 3 1/2-year investigation stretches from the heart of the old Soviet empire to Lockheed’s secretive Skunk Works plant in Southern California to a quiet suburb north of Seattle. This is the visa issued to Aleksey Yeremin, a Russian mathematician and partner in a Bothell software company that did work for Lockheed Martin. U.S. officials now say he has ties to the Russian military and now-defunct KGB. Yeremin, vice president of a software company based in Bothell that did work for Lockheed, was e-mailed part of Lockheed’s modeling program for designing stealth…

2000-10-24, Dron: ~~~ The Head of Indian Air Force decided to check MIG-21 personally, "in order to stop recent gossips about unreliability of this plane once and for all". Anil Yashvant Tipnis conducted a flight this Monday on MiG-21 fighter and immediately after the landing announced that the MIG-21 remains "unbeatable and excellent airplane". The marshal flew his sortie exactly the same day as local media published statistics according to which in the past 5 years, National Air Force lost 84 combat planes, 60 of which were MiG-21s. The result of this are deaths of 34 pilots. Experts claim however that majority of accidents is classified as "pilot error". The problem is that India has no supersonic trainers, so rookie pilots are given MiG-21s to practice on, which require good skills and expertise. MiG-21 fighter had been produced at Nasik aviation production plant. Right now, upgrades are underway for production of multifunctional Su-30MKI jets.

2000-10-22, Dron: ~~~ KIEV, 18 OCTOBER-2000. /ITAR-TASS/. During the ongoing testing program of the AN-70 freighter, fascinating performance characteristics have been acheived. The AN-70 became the only airplane of its kind capable of maintaining stable flight at speeds as low as 98km/h(!!!). According to OKB Antonov media service, for the first time in history of aviation, a 120-ton monster airship conquered speeds acheivable previously only on ultra-light planes. Joint Russian-Ukrainian pilot teams reached astonishing AOA of 30 degrees which is accessible only to highly advanced fighter jets of today. Also, immitated engine-failure never resulted in stalling/spinning etc. The AOA test results indicate that the aircraft remains manually conrolable under most extreme conditions and therefore is completely safe in all flight modes and completely satisfy National standards for new-generation airlift.
