2001-02-17, Serge Pod: ~~~Apache Longbow demonstrates aerobatics at Avalon 15 February 2001 The multi-role AH-64D Apache Longbow combat helicopter is in the spotlight this week at Australian International Airshow 2001, performing a series of loops and rolls designed to demonstrate the aircraft's aerobatic prowess. While Apache Longbow is fully aerobatic, it doesn't need to be. The radar is capable of picking up all ground and airborne targets within an area of more than 50 square kilometres -- all with a single scan. And the weapons can be aimed and fired by the crew's simply looking at the target. The Apache Longbow, produced by The Boeing Company in Mesa, Ariz., is competing for the Australian Army's Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter program, an effort known as Air 87, which will enhance Australian Army and Australian Defence Force capabilities. Boeing says Apache Longbow offers Australia a low- risk, cost-effective and off-the-shelf solution to its defence needs. The AH-64D Apache Longbow is the newest version of the…

2001-02-03, Serge Pod: IAI develops MI-8 & MI-17 tactical upgrade package 2 February 2001 A modular Tactical Upgrade Package for modernising the Russian MI-8 and MI-17 helicopters has been developed by Israel Aircraft Industries, Ltd. (IAI). These assault helicopters, manufactured in the thousands, are in operational service in many countries. Most of them, however, require upgrading to enable them to operate effectively in modern battlefield conditions. IAI's upgrade package includes a modular Avionics System based on the "Glass Cockpit" concept, an Electronic Warfare suit, and a flexible armament package. The Lahav Division's upgrade uses subsystems, which were designed for the Russian MI-35 and KA-50-2 attack helicopters, and so achieves a common architecture for both assault and attack helicopters. http://defence-data.com/storypic /mi17glasscockpit.jpg [Not image: 200, text/html] The new glass cockpit The upgrade transforms the old cockpit into modern computerised crew stations, which include multifunction electronic displays…

2001-01-27, Dron: ~~~ WASHINGTON -- After bombing missions against Japanese targets in 1944, three troubled American B-29s made emergency landings at the Soviet town of Vladivostok in southeastern Russia. The U.S. pilots assumed that as allies, they would be in friendly Russian hands. But they were wrong. "They didn't realize what was going to happen to the airplanes. But when you're on fire, you look for a place to land," said George Larson, the editor of "Air and Space/Smithsonian Magazine." Soviet leader Joseph Stalin eventually released the crews, but he ordered the B-29 Superfortresses seized and copied. He put his security chief Lavrenty Beria in charge of thousands of engineers and workers -- using fear and patriotism to drive the project. Failure could land workers in exile in Siberia. < !-- ======= WRAPPER ======= --> < !-- ======= /WRAPPER ======= --> The crews dismantled one of the planes into 105,000 parts, created blueprints and then reproduced the bomber in just two years. It is best known for its service as the Advanced Fighter Technology Integration (AFTI)/F-16 technology demonstrator since the early 1980s. Aircraft 750 flew its final flight on Jan. 9, 2001 from its birthplace in Fort Worth, Texas, to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where it will be retired and placed in the Air Force Museum there. AFTI/F-16 "The AFTI/F-16 has been an excellent platform because of the F-16's basic modern systems, the relative ease of incorporating advanced technologies and the F-16's low cost of operation and maintenance," said Don Swihart, AFTI Programme Manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton. "The AFTI/ F-16 has been a real workhorse in proving advanced fighter technologies, and it is fitting that this aircraft have its final resting place in the Air Force Museum." Aircraft 750 was…

2000-12-23, Serge Pod: ~~~Boeing JSF X-32A goes supersonic 22 December 2000 The Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32A concept demonstrator aircraft broke the sound barrier yesterday, expanding the flight envelope and meeting another of the company's 'up- and-away' test objectives. Lt. Col. Edward Cabrera, US Air Force lead test pilot assigned to the Boeing X-32A test programme, took the X-32A to 30,000 feet and exceeded Mach 1.0 in achieving supersonic flight. The flight was the aircraft's 49th since its 18 September first flight. "The X-32A approached and exceeded Mach 1 effortlessly, demonstrating significant tactical potential,'' Cabrera said. "I'm very impressed with the fact that the plane continues to fly as predicted based on extensive modelling and simulation.'' Frank Statkus, Boeing vice president and JSF general manager, said the milestone puts an exclamation point on what has been an extremely productive flight-test programme to date. "As planned, we completed the customer-required test objectives before moving on to our…

2000-12-21, Serge Pod: ~~~KC-10 Tanker Refuels X-32A Joint Strike Fighter (Source : US Department of Defense ; issued Dec. 20, 2000) EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.---The Joint Strike Fighter program reached a significant milestone here Dec. 19 when a KC-10 Extender from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., performed the first aerial refueling of Boeing's X-32A Joint Strike Fighter concept demonstrator. The Travis crew, part of the 6th Air Refueling Squadron, joined people from Edwards' 418th Flight Test Squadron for the X-32A's 40th sortie. A five-month test period began here Sept. 18. This mission involved three contacts between the X-32A and the KC-10. Because the X-32A is the Navy's JSF version, the KC-10 was required to refuel the X-32A with a drogue and probe. This required X-32A lead test pilot Cmdr. Phil Yates to carefully maneuver the fighter's refueling probe to a basket receptacle that flies freely behind the tanker. Even though probe and drogue refueling is primarily performed on Navy aircraft by Marine Corps C-130s, Yates…

2000-12-06, Dron: ~~~ Russia and Croatia are planning to increase their military co-operation. Among high-priority points here may be modernization of MiG-21 fighter jets in service with Croation Air Force. Payment for the service could be both financial and material. There is a possibility that a part of modernization bill will be used to settle 1 billion 600 million Soviet debt to Yugoslavia. According to UN resolution, Croatia is eligible for about 28% of this sum therefore Russia will have a chance to earn cash and pay off debts while Croatia will get its air force fixed and tighten relations with an old friend. 2000-11-17, Serge Pod: ~~~Boeing JSF X-32a begins simulated carrier landing tests 16 November 2000 The Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32A concept demonstrator aircraft has begun field carrier landing practice (FCLP) tests to demonstrate flying and handling qualities during low-speed aircraft carrier approach. This is the first flight since the X-32A was grounded after a hydraulics failure caused an unscheduled landing on a dry lake bed at Edwards AFB. Engineers said they have found an interim fix to the problem and hope to have a final solution by the end of the month.. US Navy Cmdr. Phillip 'Rowdy' Yates, the US government's lead test pilot for the Boeing JSF program, and Boeing lead test pilot Fred Knox are demonstrating simulated carrier landings using a Frensel lens on the ground to provide pilot cues during their approaches to a simulated carrier deck outlined on a runway at Edwards Air Force Base. 2000-10-22, Dron: ~~~ KIEV, 18 OCTOBER-2000. /ITAR-TASS/. During the ongoing testing program of the AN-70 freighter, fascinating performance characteristics have been acheived. The AN-70 became the only airplane of its kind capable of maintaining stable flight at speeds as low as 98km/h(!!!). According to OKB Antonov media service, for the first time in history of aviation, a 120-ton monster airship conquered speeds acheivable previously only on ultra-light planes. Joint Russian-Ukrainian pilot teams reached astonishing AOA of 30 degrees which is accessible only to highly advanced fighter jets of today. Also, immitated engine-failure never resulted in stalling/spinning etc. The AOA test results indicate that the aircraft remains manually conrolable under most extreme conditions and therefore is completely safe in all flight modes and completely satisfy National standards for new-generation airlift.
