2000-12-06, Dron: ~~~ Russia and Croatia are planning to increase their military co-operation. Among high-priority points here may be modernization of MiG-21 fighter jets in service with Croation Air Force. Payment for the service could be both financial and material. There is a possibility that a part of modernization bill will be used to settle 1 billion 600 million Soviet debt to Yugoslavia. According to UN resolution, Croatia is eligible for about 28% of this sum therefore Russia will have a chance to earn cash and pay off debts while Croatia will get its air force fixed and tighten relations with an old friend. 2000-11-17, Serge Pod: ~~~Boeing JSF X-32a begins simulated carrier landing tests 16 November 2000 The Boeing Joint Strike Fighter X-32A concept demonstrator aircraft has begun field carrier landing practice (FCLP) tests to demonstrate flying and handling qualities during low-speed aircraft carrier approach. This is the first flight since the X-32A was grounded after a hydraulics failure caused an unscheduled landing on a dry lake bed at Edwards AFB. Engineers said they have found an interim fix to the problem and hope to have a final solution by the end of the month.. US Navy Cmdr. Phillip 'Rowdy' Yates, the US government's lead test pilot for the Boeing JSF program, and Boeing lead test pilot Fred Knox are demonstrating simulated carrier landings using a Frensel lens on the ground to provide pilot cues during their approaches to a simulated carrier deck outlined on a runway at Edwards Air Force Base. 'The X-32A demonstrated excellent low-speed flying qualities in the carrier mode configuration,'' Yates said. 'Flight path control…

2000-11-15, Dron: ~~~ According to several reports, Ministry of Defence of Russia declared Mi-28 as the primary assault helicopter for its chopper fleet. The decision is to be finalized and become official in December. Main contenders are Ka-50 and Mi-28. Earlier, MoD was leaning towards more elegant and reliable Ka-50 Werewolf, however fire power and greater armour has always been always given priority. Most important factor traditionally is crew-safety where Mi-28 proved to be superior. Currently, OKB Mil is also running massive Mi-24 modernization funded by MoD. One of offered versions Mi-24VK-1 with night-vision equipment is already on tests in Moscow. By December another version designated Mi-24VK-2 will join the program. Besides that, OKB Mil is still testing night version of Mi-8 transport helicopters 4 of which are earning combat hours in a fight against religious maniacs in Chechnya. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Dron (edited 16-11-2000).]

To date, a total of 120 aircraft of the type have been sold. 94 of them were delivered to 20 different countires. The safety record of the aircraft however is very low. This summer, Yun-12 with 38 passengers and 4 crew members exploded in the air after being hit by lightning - no one survived. The Merlin air support chopper crashed into the sea off the coast of Scotland. It was conducting trials on the new generation sonar when engine failure occurred. One hour later Jaguar fighter-bomber jet hit a flock of seagulls and lost power in both engines soon after.  No fatalities were reported. 2000-10-22, Dron: ~~~ KIEV, 18 OCTOBER-2000. /ITAR-TASS/. During the ongoing testing program of the AN-70 freighter, fascinating performance characteristics have been acheived. The AN-70 became the only airplane of its kind capable of maintaining stable flight at speeds as low as 98km/h(!!!). According to OKB Antonov media service, for the first time in history of aviation, a 120-ton monster airship conquered speeds acheivable previously only on ultra-light planes. Joint Russian-Ukrainian pilot teams reached astonishing AOA of 30 degrees which is accessible only to highly advanced fighter jets of today. Also, immitated engine-failure never resulted in stalling/spinning etc. The AOA test results indicate that the aircraft remains manually conrolable under most extreme conditions and therefore is completely safe in all flight modes and completely satisfy National standards for new-generation airlift. 2000-07-12, Serge Pod: Boost For Russia`s Space Programme Russian rocket engineers said on Tuesday they were confident the mysterious fuel pressure loss during last week’s test launch of a Proton rocket was a one-off event and were confident that there was nothing to worry about prior to the crucial launch of the ISS’ cornerstone – Zvezda Module. The only thing the Russian space engineers were worried about before the launch was Wednesday morning’s weather forecast. “It was not really good, there is a chance of thunderstorms,” they told reporters. However, the sun was shining and the sky was clear blue when the Proton rocket carrying the Zvesda ISS module bound for the International space station was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Chief of the U.S. space agency NASA Dan Goldin attended the launch together with Yury Koptev of Russia's Space Agency. Later Goldin said the event was a triumph of Russia's will and commitment to ISS project. “The Russians have gone through all sorts of difficulty with their…
