2002-06-03, Serge Pod: Plans Under Way to Hold Il-114 Demonstration Flights in China China has proposed to the Russian side to complete demonstration flights of the 64-passenger Il-114 airplane in China either before the aviation exhibition in Dzhuhai at the end of the year or immediately after it, the chief of the Ilyushin OKB Nikolay Talikov has reported. He specified that the demonstration of the airplane is being planned practically for all of China, including in Tibet - in the mountain regions, where all the foreign competing airplanes essentially lose to the Il-114. Nikolay Talikov emphasized that China has built its own 44-passenger MA-60 airplane for local airlines. The Uhan aircraft plant only now is starting to unfold the MA-60 production program. Nonetheless, China is showing interest in the Il-114 both directly in the airplane as a needed standard size for China and as a "supplement" to the MA-60 airplane. However, China is more interested in the Il-114-100 airplane with imported engines and the Il-114T transport, but…

2002-05-29, dsamoilov: Denmark agreed Tuesday to contribute $125 million over the next decade to help the United States and the United Kingdom develop the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the first of four European countries with aging F-16 fleets to join the program. Getting allied participation in the estimated $200 billion F-35 program has been a top goal for both the U.S. Defense Department and Lockheed Martin, the main contractor for the plane. More countries participating would mean more countries buying copies of the jet — driving down costs for the Pentagon and boosting sales for Lockheed Martin. Denmark is the third U.S. ally to agree to participate in the F-35 development phase. The U.K. is contributing about $2 billion and Canada about $100 million. But it’s the first European nation owning an F-16 fleet to sign up for the development phase. Parliaments in the Netherlands and Norway – two other countries with F-16s — are discussing possible participation. The fourth country, Belgium, doesn’t plan to replace its…

2002-04-29, SERGEI Khitrovo: By Associated Press posted: 12:44 pm ET 16 April 2002 MOSCOW (AP) _ Russia plans to relocate all its military satellite launches from the Baikonur cosmodrome in the ex-Soviet republic of Kazakhstan to its own launch pad, the commander of the nation's space forces said Tuesday. Russia will continue using Baikonur, which it leases from Kazakhstan, for launching manned missions and commercial satellites, but will work to transfer all military launches to the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia, Space Forces chief Col-Gen. Anatoly Perminov said on an inspection trip to Baikonur. ``This is our task for the next eight to 10 years,'' Perminov said, according to the Interfax-Military News Agency and ITAR-Tass. He didn't explain the reasons behind the move. Some 75 percent of all Russian spacecraft, and more than half of military satellites are currently launched from Baikonur, Perminov said. Thanks to its location closer to the equator, Baikonur provides far more favorable launch conditions compared to Plesetsk.…

2002-04-29, SERGEI Khitrovo: Sun Apr 28,11:07 AM ET By Clara Ferreira-Marques BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (Reuters) - Small clumps of steppe grass are the only reminder there was once a lush park in the center of the town of Baikonur, hub of the Soviet Union's pioneering space program. Photos Reuters Photo A decade after the collapse of communism, the slow recovery of the Russian space program has brought no tenants back to the sand-colored apartment blocks stripped bare during the looting that followed Kazakh independence in 1991. The trickle of people returning to the dusty town, which Russia rents from Kazakhstan under a 1994 agreement, has not restored the population to the 100,000 that lived here during the heyday of Soviet space exploration. But Baikonur, built on the arid Kazakh steppe two years before the first sputnik, or satellite, was launched into orbit in 1957 and still Russia's main launch pad, is slowly on the mend, longtime residents say. "There was a time after the fall of the Soviet Union when the town was rudderless. People…

2002-04-25, SERGEI Khitrovo: Making Progress? Russia's Financial Problems Could Impact ISS Occupation Thu Apr 25, 9:03 AM ET By Anatoly Zak, SPACE.com Russia’s financial woes may force NASA (news - web sites) and its international partners to evacuate the permanent crew of the International Space Station (news - web sites) as early as the fall of this year, according to a senior Russian space official. Yuri Grigoriev, Deputy Designer General at RKK Energia, a leading Russian company in the ISS project, said that the lack of government funds needed to build crucial supply ships could force the project's partners to abandon the station in November. RKK Energia builds the Progress cargo ships that deliver supplies such as fuel, water and food to the outpost. However, the lack of federal funding has forced the company to delay the construction of the supply ships needed for several upcoming missions to the station in 2003. Progress vessels are estimated to cost between $20 million and $50 million depending on the current state of the…

2002-04-19, dsamoilov: Boeing Co.'s F-15K beat out Dassault's Rafale in a heavily disputed and delayed competition to build 40 fighters worth $4.5 billion for South Korea's air force, the country's ministry of defense said Friday. Korea also selected F-110 engines made by General Electric Co. Boeing was considered the front-runner in the heated competition to build a fleet of new jets for South Korea's air force by 2009. The competition was marred for months by delays and legal wrangling. At one point, Korea down-selected to Boeing and Dassault and said the fighters had scored a virtual tie so far in the competition. Korea said the final outcome would be determined by factors that included political interests, prompting many analysts to name Boeing because of South Korea's close military ties with the U.S. Dassault attempted legal action to stop the decision, calling the process unfair. Hundreds of South Koreans also took to the streets in protest last month. The Eurofighter Typhoon and Russia's Sukhoi Su-35 were eliminated in…
