2002-04-12, SERGEI Khitrovo: NASA to send teacher into space in 2004 April 12, 2002 Posted: 5:02 AM EDT (0902 GMT) Barbara Morgan has trained to become an astronaut for years. By Kate Tobin CNN Sci-Tech Unit (CNN) — Barbara Morgan, an Idaho elementary school teacher and Christa McAuliffe's backup to fly aboard the ill-fated Challenger mission in 1986, is headed to space. NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe will announce Friday in a speech on the future of the agency that Morgan will be assigned as a mission specialist on a shuttle flight to the international space station in 2004, according to sources familiar with the space agency. She has been in astronaut training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston since 1998, when then NASA chief Dan Golden announced the official resumption of the Teacher in Space program. Rather than select a new person for the job, NASA decided to stick with Morgan, who trained alongside McAuliffe for six months in 1985 and early 1986. Morgan, 50, is married and the mother of two sons. After graduating…

2002-04-12, SERGEI Khitrovo: Pentagon: U.S. bombing accuracy improved in Afghan war April 9, 2002 Posted: 10:51 AM EDT (1451 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) — An initial U.S. Navy analysis of the bombing campaign in Afghanistan has concluded that 75 percent of all munitions dropped by Navy and Marine Corps aircraft destroyed or disabled the intended target, according to an official familiar with the study. By comparison, roughly half the munitions dropped during the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and Kosovo in 1999 had a similar effectiveness, the study calculated. The key difference appears to be the military's increased use of advanced technology to aim the munitions initially and also to guide them to their targets after launch. 2002-03-17, Serge Pod: ~~~The Struggle for a Contract Worth Billions This March has all the chances of becoming the decisive period for domestic military aircraft construction. In accordance with an order of the Russian president, the lead developer of the future aviation complex for frontal aviation /PAK FA/, which is more widely known by the public as ``the fifth generation fighter,`` should be selected. The victor will receive the largest defense order in the coming 20 years. The likelihood is extremely great that in the future the winning firm will become the only developer of aviation complexes. Not only the firms are participating in the contest, but also the financial and industrial capital, and groups within the government and the Ministry of Defense that support them. The chief of the Ministry of Industry and Science, Ilya Klebanov, and his allies are proposing the drawing up of a tough line of control under the guardianship of the government and Rosaviakosmos. The are looking at withholding part of the export income from…

2002-03-17, Serge Pod: ~~~Russia Unveils Space Shuttle for Tourists American businessmen and Russian engineers unveiled the first space shuttle designed exclusively for tourism on Thursday, paving the way for tourists on a budget to taste life in zero gravity. For under $100,000 would-be astronauts will be able to take an hour-long flight aboard the ``Cosmopolis XXI``, a snub-nosed rocket-powered shuttle about the size of a minivan. The trip includes only three minutes of weightlessness, but costs a mere sliver of the $20 million reportedly paid by space tourism pioneer Dennis Tito last year for a week on the International Space Station. ``We know the potential market is huge,`` said Eric Anderson, president of the U.S.-based Space Adventures company which organised Tito`s flight. ``We literally have people waiting to go who have already paid us, who have said /they/ want to be the first to fly.`` The shuttle, a joint project by Space Adventures and Russia`s Myasishchev Design Bureau, is due to start regular flights by 2004-05.…

2002-03-13, Serge Pod: Russian Tu-204 Aircraft Becoming Competitive in Worldwide Market The Russian Tu-204 airplane is becoming competitive in the worldwide marketplace both in its technical characteristics as in costs. Ibrahim Kamel -chairman of the board of directors of the international company Sirocco Aerospace - expressed such an opinion in an interview with an RIA Novosti correspondent. The company is taking part in the upgrade program for the Tu-204 and in its preparation for international certification. In Kamel`s opinion, the Tu-204 is in no way worse than the new Boeings. ``The excellent economy of use of the airplane is combined with a system of technical support of a worldwide level and at the same time the price of the Tu-204 is 30 - 40 percent less than the cost of a similar type of Western produced airplane,`` he noted. Kamel also expressed the opinion that using the example of the Tupolev concern, Russian aircraft manufacturing can make significant successes in export trade. In particular, he emphasized that the…

A source with the Omsk airport has told Interfax that Novosibirk's Tolmachyovo airport denied the landing of flight 852 arriving from Germany and redirected the plane to Omsk. Approaching a landing strip at the Omsk airport, the pilots realized that the plane might miss the strip due to a heavy crosswind. However, as the airliner was running out of fuel, the crew did not risk making another approach and landed the plane, which then ran some 400 meters off the strip. /Interfax/ www.avia.ru
